PRODUCING
RECORDING
When a client comes to me because they want me to produce a Single / EP / Album, the production starts right away. The production part is definitely the most important part and on itself, has nothing to do with recording or mixing… yet.
For me, producing is all about getting to know the band.
Getting to know what their sound is and where they get their inspiration from.
I’m going to ask what type of sound and vibe the production needs, what the budget is and what the deadline is.
Knowing all this, I’m going to schedule all the recordings and will make sure everything you need is in the right place at the right time. That’s what producing is in a nutshell.
When an artist is ready to record, I’m gonna make sure all the right gear to do the job is present. When recording an artist I always make sure to make them feel as comfortable as possible.
However every single artist has a different approach. Some artist need me to kick their butts sometimes to make sure the product gets finished in time. Other artists are just really calm and don’t need much coaching. This is the most fun part about producing, and recording in particular.
MIXING
MASTERING
When all the recording is done, it’s not time to mix yet. What needs to be done first is edit all the recorded tracks. I’ve mixed tons of productions in the past that just didn’t sound right and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Turns out that the tracks just needed to be edited to “lock”. This makes Mixing so much easier.
I prefer mixing on my own. However, if the artist wants to be part of the mixing process that’s fine to!
After my mix is done, I send the track to the artist so they can give me feedback. Receiving this feedback I will make a new mix that fits the wishes of the artist. After that the mix should be ready. There are some instances where I need more than two mix revisits.
When I have a mix that is sounding great, the last part about the production is mastering.
Mastering brings the whole track together and makes it feel more alive, like one pleasent wall of sound in your ears.
I also make the track loud enough so it can compete with other tracks on Spotify, CD or on Vinyl, Whatever form you wish.
